The Spirit of the Pacific

Where the Ocean
Writes the Story.

Here, the landscape is never still. Waves reshape the shoreline, clouds move across the horizon, and the light changes the character of the coast from one moment to the next.

Every tide reveals a new composition. Every shift in weather offers another opportunity to see something familiar in an entirely different way.

This is photography that rewards patience, curiosity, and a willingness to follow the light.

The Southern Oregon Coast A Landscape in Constant Motion

“The best photographs aren't simply found. They're discovered by learning how to see.”

From the sea stacks of Bandon to the forested headlands of Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor, we'll explore a coastline that challenges and rewards photographers in equal measure. Our approach combines field instruction, creative exploration, and the freedom to respond to extraordinary conditions as they unfold.

The Photographic Experience

The Coast.
Four Ways.

From monumental sea stacks to quiet coastal forests, Oregon's southern shoreline offers an extraordinary variety of photographic experiences. Each environment invites a different way of seeing.

01 / The Icons

Sculpted
by the Sea.

Ancient stone rising from an ever-changing ocean.

Bandon's remarkable sea stacks are among the most recognizable formations on the Pacific coast. From the dramatic silhouette of Face Rock to countless smaller formations scattered across the shoreline, every tide and change in light reveals new possibilities.

We'll explore composition, foreground relationships, natural framing, and the interplay of rock, surf, and atmosphere.

02 / The Wild Coast

Beyond
the Horizon.

A rugged coastline where forest meets the Pacific.

Farther south, the Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor reveals a more untamed expression of the Oregon coast: steep headlands, offshore islands, natural arches, and forested cliffs.

Here, we'll look for compelling layers, sweeping perspectives, and compositions that convey the scale and character of the landscape.

03 / The Quiet Places

Into
the Green.

A quieter world of texture, atmosphere, and filtered light.

Just beyond the shoreline, coastal forests reveal another side of Oregon. Moss-covered branches, dense evergreens, intimate woodland scenes, and soft light offer a welcome contrast to the energy of the ocean.

We'll slow down and practice finding strong compositions within complex environments, using shape, texture, color, and subtle light to create photographs with depth and atmosphere.

04 / The Creative Process

The Art
of Motion.

Transform the movement of the ocean into expressive photographs.

The Pacific is an extraordinary classroom for understanding shutter speed, timing, and visual storytelling. Breaking waves, flowing water, and retreating surf create endless opportunities to experiment.

From dynamic, textured water to ethereal long exposures, we'll explore how technical choices influence mood, movement, and the emotional character of an image.

A Guide.

Great photography begins with curiosity—and a willingness to go farther.

For more than 25 years, Andrew Slaton has built a career around photography, storytelling, and the pursuit of extraordinary places. His work has taken him through remarkable landscapes and diverse environments, always guided by a desire to discover meaningful images.

Andrew's workshops combine hands-on photographic instruction with a genuine spirit of exploration. Rather than simply moving from one famous viewpoint to another, he encourages photographers to slow down, recognize opportunities, and develop their own creative perspective.

On the Oregon coast, that means responding to the changing relationship between light, weather, tides, and landscape— and making every field session an opportunity to learn.

A DSLR or mirrorless camera, a wide-angle lens, and a standard zoom are an excellent starting point. A sturdy tripod is strongly recommended for seascapes and long exposures.

Neutral-density filters, a polarizer, extra batteries, memory cards, and weather protection for your gear are also useful.
