Great Smoky Mountains Photography Expedition

October 20–24, 2027 | Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

Experience the extraordinary beauty of autumn in the Great Smoky Mountains, where vibrant hardwood forests, cascading mountain streams, atmospheric valleys, and layers of mist-covered ridges create one of America's most captivating photographic landscapes.

Join photographer Andrew Slaton for five days exploring Great Smoky Mountains National Park during the fall color season. From intimate woodland compositions and flowing water to expansive mountain vistas, this expedition is designed to help you develop your creative vision while photographing the rich textures and colors of the southern Appalachians.

We'll focus on working with natural light, capturing the movement of water, and finding compelling compositions in both grand landscapes and the smallest details of the forest. Our itinerary will remain flexible to take advantage of changing foliage, weather, and photographic conditions.

The Experience

  • Five days of guided landscape and nature photography instruction

  • Sunrise and sunset field sessions planned around favorable conditions

  • Autumn foliage, cascading streams, waterfalls, forest details, and layered mountain landscapes

  • Instruction in long exposures, filtration, composition, exposure, and creative techniques

  • Guided hikes and walks through scenic mountain environments

  • Image reviews, post-processing instruction, and constructive feedback

  • Pre-workshop preparation materials and a personal Q&A session

  • Small-group experience with a maximum 6:1 student-to-instructor ratio

  • Four nights of double-occupancy lodging near the national park

  • Transportation between photography locations during the workshop
