The Great Smoky Mountains Experience

Where Autumn
Becomes an Art Form.

Some landscapes ask you to look. The Smokies invite you to linger, to notice, and to see the familiar world in an entirely different light.

Follow the Light.
Find the Extraordinary.

Autumn transforms the Great Smoky Mountains into an extraordinary tapestry of color and atmosphere. Golden hardwood forests climb ancient ridgelines. Mountain streams wind through fallen leaves, and waterfalls disappear into quiet, moss-covered hollows.

Late October offers a remarkable range of photographic possibilities. Higher elevations may already be transitioning toward winter, while lower valleys and sheltered forests often glow with the rich colors of fall. Morning mist, changing weather, and soft seasonal light give every location its own character.

Our workshop is designed to go beyond the familiar overlooks. We'll explore intimate woodland scenes, moving water, layered mountain landscapes, and the fleeting moments when atmosphere and light come together. Rather than rushing between destinations, we'll give each location the time it deserves.

Whether you're discovering the fundamentals of landscape photography or refining an established creative vision, you'll receive personalized instruction in composition, exposure, working with natural light, and developing a more intentional photographic approach.

Come for the colors of autumn. Leave seeing the landscape — and your photography — in a new light.

The Photographic Opportunities

Autumn Through
A Different Lens.

From cascading mountain streams to forests glowing with autumn color, the Great Smoky Mountains offer remarkable photographic diversity. We'll explore both sweeping landscapes and the intimate details that make this season so extraordinary.

01 / Waterfalls & Mountain Streams

Where Water
Shapes the Landscape.

The Smokies are home to countless mountain streams, cascades, and waterfalls. In autumn, these waterways wind through forests of gold, copper, and crimson, creating an extraordinary interplay of movement, color, and texture.

We'll explore how shutter speed, composition, and changing light can transform flowing water into expressive photographs. From silky long exposures to the delicate details of water moving over stone, every scene offers a new creative possibility.

02 / Autumn Forests & Color

A Forest
Set Aglow.

Few places celebrate autumn quite like the southern Appalachian Mountains. Towering hardwoods, winding trails, and richly colored forest canopies create a remarkable palette of amber, scarlet, rust, and gold.

We'll learn to find order within the visual complexity of the forest, using light, shape, and color relationships to create photographs that feel intentional rather than overwhelming.

Behind the Photograph

Color harmony, woodland composition, visual simplicity, light direction, and contrast.

03 / Intimate Landscapes & Details

The Beauty
of Looking Closer.

Beyond the grand vistas, the Smokies reveal a quieter world of photographic possibilities. Fallen leaves rest on moss-covered stone. Ferns and roots trace intricate patterns across the forest floor. Small pools reflect the colors of the canopy.

These intimate scenes invite us to slow down and refine our ability to recognize compelling subjects. We'll explore how texture, pattern, selective focus, and thoughtful framing can transform ordinary details into memorable images.

Behind the Photograph

Intimate composition, depth of field, texture, pattern, and visual storytelling.

04 / Mountain Vistas & Atmosphere

Mountains Lost
in the Mist.

The Great Smoky Mountains take their name from the blue-gray haze that drifts across their ancient ridges. At sunrise, layers of mountains emerge through shifting mist, while autumn color spreads across the valleys below.

We'll explore how to use changing weather, atmospheric perspective, and the direction of light to communicate depth and mood. From sweeping panoramas to carefully composed telephoto landscapes, the mountains offer opportunities to photograph both grandeur and subtlety.

The beauty is everywhere.
The art is learning how to see it.

Meet
Andrew Slaton.

A photographer, storyteller, and lifelong explorer with more than 25 years of professional experience.

For Andrew, photography has always been about more than making beautiful images. It's a way to connect with the natural world, slow down, and discover the extraordinary in places both familiar and far away.

Based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Andrew has spent years exploring the landscapes of the Southern Appalachians. The Smokies offer a particularly rich opportunity to explore the relationship between light, atmosphere, and the natural world.

His workshops are intentionally personal. Rather than teaching everyone the same lesson, Andrew works with each guest at their own level—whether they're picking up a camera for the first time or looking to refine an established photographic style.

My goal isn't to help you take the same photograph I would. It's to help you create the photograph only you can see.

Before You
Follow the Light.

Everything you need to feel confident about joining us for five days of autumn photography in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Do I need to be an experienced photographer?

Absolutely not. This workshop welcomes photographers of all experience levels, from complete beginners to experienced landscape photographers.

Our small-group format allows instruction to be tailored to your abilities and goals. If you're just starting out, we'll build a strong technical foundation. If you've been photographing for years, we'll focus on refining your vision, composition, and creative technique.

What photography equipment should I bring?

A DSLR or mirrorless camera, a versatile lens, and a sturdy tripod make an excellent starting point. A wide-angle lens is useful for mountain vistas and waterfalls, while a telephoto lens can help isolate layers of colorful forest, intimate details, and distant ridgelines.

A circular polarizer is particularly helpful for managing reflections on wet leaves, rocks, and water. Neutral-density filters, extra batteries, memory cards, and rain protection are also recommended. We'll provide more detailed equipment suggestions before the workshop.

How physically demanding is the workshop?

The workshop involves a combination of roadside photography and moderate walking on natural trails. Some locations may include uneven ground, rocky paths, muddy surfaces, or slippery streamside terrain.

Walking distances and difficulty will depend on the photographic locations selected and conditions during the workshop. If you have mobility concerns or specific physical requirements, please discuss them with us before booking.

What is the weather like in the Smokies in October?

Late October is a beautiful time to visit the Smokies, with cool mornings, colorful hardwood forests, and the possibility of atmospheric fog and mist in the valleys.

Mountain weather can change quickly, and temperatures vary considerably with elevation. Rain, wind, and colder conditions are all possible. We recommend waterproof outerwear, insulating layers, comfortable hiking footwear, and protection for your camera equipment.

Is lodging included in the workshop price?

Yes. Four nights of lodging in the Townsend, Tennessee area are included in the $2,400 workshop price, based on double occupancy.

If you'd prefer a private room, please ask about single-occupancy availability and any additional cost before booking.

Are meals and transportation included?

Transportation during scheduled photographic outings within Great Smoky Mountains National Park is included. Travel to and from Townsend, Tennessee, is not included.

Meals and beverages are the participant's responsibility unless specifically identified as included. We'll provide arrival instructions and meeting details before the workshop.

What is the group size?

We maintain a maximum participant-to-instructor ratio of 6:1. This keeps the workshop personal and provides opportunities for individual guidance, meaningful feedback, and a relaxed group experience.

A minimum of four participants is required for the workshop to operate.

How do I reserve my place?

The workshop price is $2,400 per participant, with a $500 deposit required to reserve your place. The deposit is applied toward the total workshop price, leaving a balance of $1,900.

Online deposit checkout is being prepared. In the meantime, you can schedule a personal consultation to discuss availability, booking arrangements, and any questions you may have.

What happens if I need to cancel?

Reservations are subject to the workshop's published booking, cancellation, and refund policies.

Please review those terms before submitting a deposit. Travel insurance is strongly recommended to help protect against covered unexpected circumstances.

Can I bring a spouse or travel companion?

If you'd like to attend with a spouse, partner, or companion who may not be as interested in photography, please get in touch before booking.

We'll discuss the workshop's structure and whether it would be a suitable experience for both of you. Participation, lodging, and pricing arrangements must be confirmed in advance.
